Time tracking by fingerprint

Not a good solution in practice

For many companies, time tracking by fingerprint is a popular alternative to ID media. In most cases, the cost factor is in the foreground, since at first glance the purchase of a fingerprint reader appears to be more favorable. But the aspect of hygiene has been neglected so far. This should change now!

Hygiene problem fingerprint sensor

With the Corona virus came stricter hygiene regulations - to protect employees and their family members. This includes that all contact surfaces must be cleaned and disinfected regularly. This is an important point that many companies fail to take into account when it comes to recording working hours. Fingerprint recording seems practical, but it is not hygienic. Each employee, after placing his finger on the time clock, would have to disinfect it for the next colleague. That is certainly not practicable.

High error rate with fingerprint

Errors are not uncommon when using fingerprints for time and attendance. Where physical work is performed, soiling of the hands or terminal cannot be avoided. If the soiling is too great, the fingerprint will not be recognized. Even small changes to the skin, such as calluses or blisters, can lead to errors in fingerprint recognition. Things get complicated when employees have to wear gloves. As a result, working hours are not recorded and have to be entered manually by the payroll department. Errors often occur when the fingerprints are taught to the time clock. If the employee now wants to record his working time, it is not recognized - the fingerprint has to be taught again.

The work behind the fingerprint

Another factor that should not be underestimated is the effort required by the responsible employee and the administrator for each new employee. Simply hold your finger on it and the working time is recorded - that's the idea of many companies. The reality, however, is quite different. Every single fingerprint of every employee must be trained on the wall terminal before it can even be stamped by fingerprint. The initial enrollment takes up valuable working time. In order to avoid errors during enrollment and to keep the workload for payroll employees low, many companies discard the fingerprint system after only a short time. Instead of the time-consuming and error-prone fingerprint, they then use RFID access control.

RFID chip versus fingerprint

geoCapture uses small RFID chips to record working hours. Each employee receives his or her own chip with which he or she stamps his or her working hours at the terminal or in the vehicle. With geoCapture, each chip is quickly and easily assigned to an employee. The setup is done once by the payroll department. The RFID chip can also be used for other functions, such as access control or immobilization in company vehicles. The chips are robust and can easily be carried on a key ring - so they are ready to hand whenever you need to clock in. Another advantage of time recording via RFID chip is data protection. After an employee leaves, the chip can simply be deleted from the system and assigned to another employee. The fingerprint must first be laboriously deleted from the wall terminals.

Time recording via mobile app

With the mobile app, geoCapture offers another way to record working hours. Each employee gets his own app, with only the functions he needs. A constant login is not necessary. The mobile devices are managed centrally in the geoCapture portal. To protect your company data even better, individual devices can be easily locked in case of loss. Updates and new features are immediately available on all end devices - annoying updates are completely eliminated. Everyone always works with the latest software version. Time stamps are recorded with a touch.
